PTV EV Truck Route Planner 2.0 – the next level

The PTV EV Truck Route Planner was already a ''world first'' when it was released in June 2023. The world's first manufacturer-independent route planner for EV vans and trucks contained around 200 vehicle variants and was able to forecast the exact consumption on the route for each one, making research much easier for fleet managers considering the electrification of their fleet.

Even in the previous version, multi-stop routes with different loads at the individual stations and weather conditions could be calculated on the basis of realistic, professional route planning, taking into account truck restrictions and traffic obstructions.

The scenario manager could be used to calculate scenarios with the weather of another day or simply your own weather scenario, or the ageing of the battery could be taken into account.

These are the new features

Integration of charging options

It is now possible to specify the charging options available on site at each stop, including the charging speed provided by the charging point. The required charging time is then calculated from the characteristics of the vehicle, the current battery charge, and the possibilities of the charging station.

Optimization of charging options

The charging options along the route are not only displayed, but the system also optimizes where and how long charging takes place to optimize the additional charging time. This can make a big difference.

Expanded Vehicle Database: 400+ Variants

The vehicle database with the digital twins of the vehicles used for calculations has been expanded to over 400 vehicle variants and covers a large part of the market.

Enhanced calculation of energy consumption

With the experience gained from operating the EV route planner, we were able to significantly improve the algorithms for considering regional weather influences, crosswinds, altitude differences, rolling resistance, driving behavior, battery management, temperature influences and secondary consumers.

Use via the API in PTV Developer

All new features including the vehicle database, the vehicle-specific consumption calculation and the charging suggestions are also available in PTV Developer as an API for integration into your own software

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EV route planner?

An EV route planner (EV=Electric Vehicle) is a planning tool specifically for electric vehicles. It helps to plan the route and to consider the weather, traffic conditions and the range of the vehicle. A route planner for commercial vehicles should also take into account the vehicle variant, the load and the traffic restrictions for these vehicles. Often, finding, and simulating charging stations along the route or access in LEZ and ZEZ (Low Emission Zone/Zero Emission Zone) also played a role.

What types of weather conditions are taken into account in EV route planning?

The EV Truck Route Planner considers a variety of weather conditions, including temperature, wind direction, wind speed, including crosswinds. This weather data is specific per station and time and can also be simulated for different days or set manually. This weather data makes planning realistic and enables precise consumption forecasts.

How can I integrate the EV route calculation of the PTV Developer API into my own software products?

The PTV Developer API enables the same EV route calculation functions as the EV Truck Route Planner, including the extended vehicle database, consumption calculations and charging optimization. Extensive documentation and sample code is available for developers to seamlessly integrate the API into their own software products.
