PTV EV Truck Route Planner

The best EV simulator

Calculate routes using more than 400 digital twins of electric trucks and gain insight into how these vehicles operate on the road. Calculate energy consumption, range, and optimized charging scenarios for realistic truck routes that include multiple stops with varying payloads, considering weather, elevation, truck restrictions, road traffic, or driver behaviour.

Run your simulation with different weather conditions, battery aging, or battery condition settings.

> 400 electric vehicles

The digital twins of vehicle models and different battery variants let you explore these vehicles in your specific routing and charging situation.

Consumption / Ranges

Calculating routes in a realistic scenario, with multi-stop routes, weather truck restrictions etc. provides valuable insights, into which routes are feasible for specific vehicles and which not.

Simulations

Time to play: How does the vehicle behave in winter/summer, with strong headwinds, or if the battery is only half full? Where do you have to place chargers, so routes are feasible, and how long do they have to charge?

Use cases for EV truck route planning

Feasibility Check

… help you determine which vehicles would be interesting for your use case, with your routes and with existing vehicle models.

It can answer questions like:

  • How do they perform?
  • What if you operate them in winter/summer?
  • What if you place a charging station at a defined location, which routes will be feasible then?
  • When you have several charging opportunities, where to charge best?

Feasibility Scenarios

… help identify route setups that enhance BEV efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

These scenarios often:

  • Are longer routes
  • Are depot revisit routes
  • Include charging
  • Can be tested with different vehicles and charging possibilities

Select Best-fit Routes

... for saving money in an operational use case.

Typically, you select:

  • Focus on long, but feasible routes, with some buffer left
  • Prioritise routes that offer benefits over diesel, such as toll road usage in Germany or Switzerland

Functions of PTV EV Truck Route Planner

Vehicle Database

  • Vehicle classes: truck, van
  • Vehicle technologies: BEV
  • Mainly European vehicles
  • Vehicle detail information on range, battery, weights, payloads, Top speed, charging plugs and speed, use cases, battery technology, power, launch year, website of manufacturer etc.
  • Internal calculation models used for routing
  • Vehicles can be searched for, selected and filtered
  • Battery variants can also be selected

Basic Routing

  • Single field search for addresses or POIs
  • Click on the map for a stop
  • Multiple stops
  • Changing the order of stops
  • Edit the payload at a stop
  • Weather (temperature, wind direction and wind speed) are assigned automatically)

Truck-optimised Routing

  • Truck-specific routes
  • Truck attributes considered for routing: weight, axle weight, width, length, height, maximum speed, commercial purpose
  • Traffic (live/historic/predicted)
  • Eco routing

International Features

  • Worldwide maps
  • English/German language
  • Metric or imperial units
  • Differentiate date/time formats
  • Currencies
  • Configurable map display (colours, truck restrictions)

Routing Results

  • Coloured route showing battery capacity from green via red to black
  • Coloured route showing relative consumption on route
  • Feasibility results: Doable with sufficient battery, Critical: Doable but low battery at destination, not doable, and showing always, how much battery would be available or missing at each stop
  • Route stats: No of stops, distance, duration, elevation up/down
  • Costs: toll km and toll costs, costs per km, total costs (Route Analyst exclusive)
  • Consumption: consumption/100 km or miles/kWh, total kWh (driving), gross kWh (needed to recharge vehicle)
  • Battery log Diagram showing battery usage

Charging

  • Charging is configurable at each stop
  • Charging speed is configurable at each stop
  • Charging time is configurable at each stop
  • Charging stops are automatically optimised to reduce the additional time for charging, considering the charging speed of the vehicle and charging station, charging curves of the vehicle and the time you can use for charging at the stop anyway (e.g. because you are there and unload)
  • Charging time is calculated and shown in the route list and map

ePTO

  • Energy used by ePTO (Electric Power TakeOut) or eMPTO at a stop, can added and considered
  • Special vehicles like for waste, concrete, cranes or sewer cleaners, often need additional energy from the battery of the vehicle

Route Analysis Features

  • Mass-upload of routes, a template is provided
  • Result files from the route planning systems PTV OptiFlow, PTV Route Optimiser ST and CL can be used directly
  • Configure your specific cost settings
  • Calculate all routes with one click
  • Download all routes including the calculated values
  • Edit all routes, add/delete routes and save them
  • Provides route KPIs including total costs, average costs/km or mile, toll cost, toll km/miles

Settings

  • Stop settings: Payload (showing max payload), charging possibility, charging speed, charging time, ePTO-energy
  • Route settings: Battery at start / desired minimum battery / include live traffic conditions, energy saving route, charge on route
  • Weather settings: By date (can be in the past), then the complete daily changes are considered – or manual weather, where temperature, wind direction and wind speed can be determined manually
  • Battery settings: Batteries get older, you can define usage in years and distance run to take it into account
  • Cost settings: Electricity cost, km-related costs and hourly related costs can be configured additionally to the toll cost calculated to calculate the overall operational cost
